Three World Premieres: Inner Fire, Repeated Petitions, and Diwan Songs

Dear friends, colleagues, and fellow music lovers,

This has been a very busy stretch of premieres and composing. Three new pieces, three countries, about ten weeks. Thank you, as always, for following along.

Inner Fire (Cello Concerto No. 2) had its world premiere on June 21 at Jordan Hall in Boston, with Kristina Reiko Cooper and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project under Gil Rose. The premiere was absolutely fantastic and so was the recording session that same day. Kristina played the piece with incredible depth and expression - and I must say it is so virtuosic and demanding - and she did incredibly with it. Gil Rose and BMOP were the perfect group to premiere such a large new concerto, and I am looking forward to sharing the recording.

Rhapsody on Diwan Songs finally received its premieres at the York Early Music Festival on July 8 then in Colmar France on the tenth, and by the end of the month the piece had its German premiere in Schwäbisch Gmünd. I should have a recording from the last performance soon to share.

The newest of the three, Repeated Petitions, had its world premiere on August 8 — Zuill Bailey and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra (Summermusik), conducted by Eckart Preu. Zuill is taking it on tour this fall; more on that below.

Other highlights from the summer: Min Kwon performed A Variation on America the Beautiful at the Meany Center in Seattle; Ekaterina Skliar gave Fantasia for Domra in Philadelphia; Trio Colores performed Udacrep Akubrad in Winterthur; Mackenzie Melemed brought Lament and Variations to Kimito, Finland, continuing its remarkable run; Vivi Vassileva and Lucas Campara Diniz performed Child's Play in Varna, Bulgaria; the Leon Lorenz Percussion Ensemble gave Frozen in Time in Salzburg; and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Panamá, conducted by César Leal, performed Tanyaderas in Chitré.

Looking Ahead

Repeated Petitions keeps touring this fall: Spokane (Barrister Winery, September 13), the Sitka Music Festival (September 20), and then its West Coast premiere with the full Spokane Symphony under James Lowe on October 10, part of their Visions of Humanity series. Zuill brings it to the Long Beach Symphony on November 14.

In early November, Sinfonia Rotterdam and conductor Conrad van Alphen give four performances across Rotterdam and The Hague — the Mandolin Concerto and the Concerto for Mandolin, Guitar, and Strings, with Jacob Reuven and Adam Levin.

Also coming up:

  • Sextet — Orli Shaham and Aspen Music Festival School faculty, Harris Concert Hall, August 15
  • Nigunim — Kerson Leong, Philip Chiu, and the Philharmonisches Streichquartett Berlin, in Wellington, Ontario, August 28

Thank you for reading, and for following the music this far. I hope to see you at a concert soon.

Warmly,
Avner
