Program Note

I composed Chorale for Strings as the opening movement of Accord/Discord, a large-scale dance piece commissioned by the Bat-Dor Dance Company for choreographer Igal Perry. I wrote this movement almost instantaneously after meeting Igal for the first time. He showed me a tiny bit of the choreography and had to leave the room for a few minutes, and during this time, I improvised the basis for this piece. One might think of this piece as overlapping chains of suspensions, where a new dissonance in one suspension always accompanies a resolution in another. These dissonances are mostly soft and lyrical.
