Program Note
In the "Mazurka" (2022), my profound admiration and extensive study of Scriabin and Chopin converge, breathing new life into the venerable mazurka form—a form I've explored both at the keyboard and through in-depth analysis. Commissioned by and dedicated to the exceptional Anna Kijanowska, with the support of WPTA POLAND and the University of Silesia, this piece is a testament to the enduring inuence of these composers on my creative voice.
The mazurka, with its rich heritage and distinctive rhythm, serves as the canvas upon which I draw a series of aural reections, shaped by my intimate engagement with the works of these piano masters. The dance's traditional framework is reinterpreted, revealing a tapestry woven with improvisatory threads and an almost dreamlike quality, reminiscent of Scriabin's mysticism and Chopin's poetic nuances.
Through a condensed rondo form, the "Mazurka" invites the pianist to traverse a landscape that is at once deeply familiar and boldly innovative. My love for the nuanced palettes of Scriabin and Chopin has inspired a piece that is not merely a homage, but a personal narrative that continues the evolution of the mazurka, inviting listeners to experience this historical dance through a contemporary lens.
